POSMETRO.ID | PALEMBANG – A heartfelt moment unfolded at the Ilir Timur II Police Precinct in Palembang on Monday afternoon (January 6, 2025), as Police Chief Kompol Desy Ariyanti, SH, MH, witnessed a detainee embracing Islam. The detainee, formerly a Buddhist, decided to convert to Islam in a solemn ceremony held at the precinct.
Kompol Desy shared her experience of being asked to serve as a witness for the detainee, Dedi Candra Bin Erwin, as he officially declared his faith in Islam. The conversion was guided by a prominent Islamic cleric in Palembang, Ustadz Amma, who led Dedi in reciting the Shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith). Ustadz Amma also provided spiritual guidance on the responsibilities of a devout Muslim, urging Dedi to strive toward becoming a pious servant of Allah (SWT).
"This was a significant moment," said Kompol Desy, who previously served as the head of traffic police in Muara Enim. "Dedi voluntarily expressed his desire to embrace Islam and was renamed Muhammad Dedi Candra Bin Erwin Susanto."
The conversion process proceeded smoothly and peacefully, without any external pressure. "Ustadz Amma officiated the ceremony, and everything went well in a safe and conducive atmosphere," added the hijab-clad police chief.
When asked about his decision, Muhammad Dedi explained that his desire to convert stemmed from a deep admiration for Islam. During his time in detention, he often observed his Muslim cellmates responding to the call to prayer (adhan) with remarkable devotion.
"I was deeply moved by how they would perform ablution (wudu), pray together, and then exchange warm handshakes, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie," Dedi recounted. "It touched my heart and inspired me to follow their path."
The story of Muhammad Dedi's conversion is a testament to the power of faith and human connection, even in the confines of detention. His journey not only marks a new chapter in his life but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the transformative power of sincerity and spiritual exploration.
